20066—Roy. J. Barnes, 108th Battery, Field Artillery Brigade, embarked for England on 10th May, 1916, went through his training on Salisbury Plains and arrived in France, 28th Dec. 1916. In a letter he said :—
"We went into a rest camp for the night and slept in tents that were wet and muddy. Next morning we entrained and travelled nearly two days. On New Year`s Day we expressed our goodwill towards Fritz through our guns."
Since that time Roy has been in the firing line without furlough until wounded last October. He was struck by a piece of bomb, but fortunately was not very severely hit, as he expressed the hope in a letter just received, that he would rejoin the battery in a few weeks. In a letter he mentions having met Jim Grieves and goes on to say:-
"We have had a pretty lively time since I last wrote to you, but I am glad to say gained all our objectives." Our Young Men's Class sends Roy very best wishes and we all hope his recovery will be speedy.
NOTE: It is not clear why the Minister refers to Robert as Roy. It may have been an inadvertant error, or Roy was Robert's nickname.
