Mr P Bartley, of 67 Hall street, Moonee Ponds,
has been informed that his son, Private J Bartley,
a stretcher bearer in the 6th Field Ambulance,
now on active service in France, has been awarded
the military medal. Eight bearers volunteered
to get the wounded out under heavy
shell fire, and all except Private Bartley and his
mate (Private Markey (1), who was also awarded
the medal) were killed. For seven hours the two
lads laboured at their dangerous task, and both
had the good luck to come through without a
scratch. Private Bartley was in hospital for a week
with a strained back but is now back again in the
field.
