Lance-Sgt. Cyril Beck, who won his first stripe in the trenches at Gallipoli, was promoted to corporal in Egypt, and lance-sergeant last month. He writes that the Anzac boys, amongst them being a few Essendonites, are looking forward to something very big shortly, when they will all give a good account of themselves. He also acknowledges the incalculable benefits the Y.M.C.A. have showered upon. the men at the front. Lance-Sergt. Beck is the oldest son, of Mr. M. H. Beck, commercial traveller, Ardoch street, Essendon.

In a letter sent to Mr. M. H. Beck. Ardoch street, Essendon, the father of the late Sergt. C. H. Beck, who was killed in France, it appears that on the night of August 7th., Sergt. Beck called for volunteers to help bring in some wounded comrades. There was an immediate response from many of the brave lads. The party reached the first enemy trench, where their wounded pals were lying helpless, when the enemy opened fire on them. Sergt. Beck fell, mortally wounded. This is not war: it is simply murder.
