VILLERS-BRETONNEUX MEMORIAL
OUR SOLDIERS
The following has been received by Mrs. E. J. Bradley, 33 Ormond road, Ascot Vale, regarding her son. Cpl. A. W. Bradley, who is missing: France.
Sept. 30th, 1916.
Dear Mr. Bradley,
Your son, 1656, Cpl. A. W. Bradley, of my company, has been posted "missing" since about the 4th August last, and inquiries made among his comrades have failed to throw any light on his fate. He was engaged on work which involved passing through intense barrages of heavy shells, and it is possible that he was buried in the cavity caused by an explosion. At any rate he seems to have completely disappeared, and I am afraid that the chance of his being still alive is a remote one. Had he been taken prisoner we should have heard before now.
I always looked on Corporal Bradley as one of my best N.C.O's for he was a good soldier and bore uncomplainingly all the hard ships and discomforts of campaigning. As one of our old Anzac veterans, and be cause he was a cool and brave man, he commanded the respect of his officers and men, and we miss him very much. I deplore the uncertainty of his fate, but if he is dead you can rest assured that he died bravely in victorious battle, and I hope his good record in the service of his country will be of comfort to you and your family.
Yours sincerely.
A. R. WILTSHIRE,
Capt. Commanding C Coy, 22nd Batt.
Cpl. Bradley sailed for the front on July 16, 1915,and was only 19 years old.
