I was close to Carick when a shell came over and hit the other side of the trench and threw him back into the dug-out where Sgt Bland was. Both his legs were shattered. Dr Fletcher dressed him and told me there was not much hope for him. It happened near Ploegstert about 9 pm we were all in bed. I should have been in the dugout too if there had been room. This was at Btn Hqrs a mile behind the front line trench on Aug 11/17/ He was buried in the British Cemetery half way between Steenwerck and Newuve Egliese. he came from Gippsland. Eyewitness: Yes Description: Dark, Clean-shaven, about 28, E stands for Ernest, he was a great horseman and breaking in horses was his occupation.

The Revd G Kennedy Tucker laid him to rest in the Trois Arbres Cemetery. A cross is erected over the grave. All particulars were sent to his mother a few days after his death. This letter will probably have reached her ere this.

I knew Pte Ernest Carick of the 14th Battn Pioneers, HQ. He came from Victoria and was I think a horse breaker. I saw him badly hit near Messines in Aug 1917. I was told by one of the Corporals at the CCS about 2 half miles from Neuve Eglise that Carick had died there, and was buried in the Military Cemetery.
