I was close to Carick when a shell came over and hit the other side of the trench and threw him back into the dug-out where Sgt Bland was.  Both his legs were shattered.  Dr Fletcher dressed him and told me there was not much hope for him.  It happened near Ploegstert about 9 pm we were all in bed.  I should have been in the dugout too if there had been room.  This was at Btn Hqrs a mile behind the front line trench on Aug 11/17/ He was buried in the British Cemetery half way between Steenwerck and Newuve Egliese.  he came from Gippsland.

"He was brought into this hospital on the 11th August last suffering from internal wounds received in action.  Although everything possible was done for him he passed away the next day.  The Revd G Kennedy Tucker laid him to rest in the Trois Arbres Cemetery.  A cross is erected over the grave.  All particulars were sent to his mother a few days after his death.  This letter will probably have reached her ere this.

I knew Pte Ernest Carick of the 14th Battn Pioneers, HQ.  He came from Victoria and was I think a horse breaker.  I saw him badly hit near Messines in Aug 1917.  I was told by one of the Corporals at the CCS about 2 half miles from Neuve Eglise that Carick had died there, and was buried in the Military Cemetery.
