Dear Miss Deakin

I regret to say that I have just been informed of my brothers death, No 6479 Pte E H Coningsby [?] Coy 7th Battn AIF, by looking through the Casualty list issue by the Red Cross people.  Now I want to ask you if it is possible for you to do me a favor by sending me all official notification, as I am the only son left, and by producing that notification I have a big chance of returning to Australia to assist my people home there.

I should also like, if it is possible for you to find out in anyway, how, & when he was killed and if he was buried or no.  I must say I am very sorry indeed to put you to any trouble, but I am most heart broken and him being my only Brother I would like to find out any particulars so as I can forward them on to his wife in Australia.  Hoping to hear from you at an early date.

I am
Yours Obediently
4396 Robert H Coningsby
58th Battn

The AIF Nominal Roll shows that 1157 Pte Coningsby Robert Henry 23rd Battalion, embarked 7.5.15 Returned to Australia 29.8.15.  Also 4296 Sgt Coningsby Robert Henry 58th Battalion embarked 22.2.16 and Returned to Australia 16.6.19.    His plan to be returned to Australia early did apparently not bear any fruit.
