Doddrell stated that he did a three year apprenticeship with Blay Bros, Ascot Vale. In 1915 a Doddrell family resided at 7 Flower St, Essendon, one of the members of that family being a grocer.  In 1919 Robert Ernest Doddrell returned to Flower St, at number 5.

Witness was in next dug-out at Durham's Post about 6 weeks ago when Doddrell of B Co left Peninsula for hosp with rheumatism.  He had previously been wounded in the foot and returned to his coy on the Peninsula after it had been at Rest Camp.  He had also been at Convalescent Camp, Mudros E (for this refer to Pte J S Bellamy, 1913, B Co, 14th Battn, now at Anzac Base Details.

At Bullecourt 11th April he was hit in the back when he was with me, some one bandaging him up/ We were in a shell hole for about two hours between 1st and 2nd Line of trenches.  I have him a hand to get back to 1st trench as he could only hobble, the stretcher bearers took him from there.  He was in my platoon one of my best chums.  5 feet 7" freckled face.  He got knocked back about mid-day could not bring wounded who could not walk.
