Eades A B  Gunner  4642

Page history last edited by Lenore Frost 6 years, 11 months ago

Volunteers of Essendon and Flemington, 1914-1918

This photograph of a group of unidentified West Australian soldiers taken at Anzac in the Shrapnel Gully area in November 1915 was sent to his family by 4642 Gunner Alfred Bailey Eades, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade.  After serving at Gallipoli, he went on to serve with the 12th Field Artillery Brigade where he was promoted to Second Lieutenant. Later promoted to Lieutenant, he was on leave in England when he contracted influenza and was admitted to hospital where he subsequently died on 12 November 1918 and was buried in the Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey, England. http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/P10427.022/

* The above photo has turned up in the collection of the Warrnambool RSL where it is described as "SNAPE-009 HAROLD: H visiting a gun crew on Gallipoli, circa 29 November 1915, following the snow-storm".  The gun crew is presumably that of Eades, which was the 2 Field Artillery Battalion.

we are leaving here direct for the Peninsula at about 7.40 am tomorrow.  We go by train to Alexandria and then embark on the "Hitonian" (or something like that) either for Anzac Cover direct or perhaps to Lemnos Is first.  Will has changed his rank from driver to gunner in order to get away together, & nearly all our drivers have done the same.  We all expect to go to the Ammunition Column first & I daresay we will then be split up into different batteries.

..... p3
Also hope George and Arthur Hamilton are well again & now fit for the front.  There are a lot of men leaving here this week I believe & also think we shall want a good many more.

Must congratulate Rupert on his promotion if he has not yet left Australia.  He has got on very well & I think he ought to be satisfied with that.  Don't forget to give us his address when he leaves as we must hunt him up if we get a chance.  Also Arthur & George and anyone else that is coming over.

p1 .. Just a few lines to let you see we are getting on alright & to wish you many happy returns of your birthday......  We are comfortably settled and Bill is now just next door to me.

Our dugouts are fairly comfortable & in pretty safe positions, the only thing I and many others have to complain about are the FLEAS in capital letters as there see to be hundreds of them.  You can just imagine what I looked like when I got up this morning.  I was not able to sleep last night & so far this morning I have captured about ten in my blankets and half a dozen more on my clothes.  ....  They do not trouble Will very much.  He must have a tougher hide than I.

p2   I saw Griff Stevenson for a minute or two the other morning.  He looks very well & is with the Engineers.
