OUR SOLDIERS
Private J. English, son of Mr. English, Addison street, Moonee Ponds, writing from France on July 30th, 1916, says he is well and happy, and describes the country as beautiful. His division had been in action, and it was a great experience. If the young fellows in Australia only knew, it would not take a second thought for them to enlist. The boys were doing well over there, and were getting great praise in the English papers. Though longing to be home again. Pte. English did not wish to come until the job had been finished.
They were in the trenches for a certain time and out of them for a certain time. They had a spell in the rest camp to get strong again. Some of the chaps' nerves get affected, and the rest in these camps does them good. The roar of the artillery is continuous, and it is astonishing how anyone can live in such a hell. The Germans are feeling it now, and are giving themselves up in thousands. At the time of writing there is a terrific bombardment going on.
