FAREWELL TO FOOTBALLERS.
The committee of the Essendon (Association) Football Club entertained seven of their players who are going to the front at dinner at Ye Olderfleet Cafe on Saturday evening. The president (Councillor T F Lyons) was in the chair. The guests were T Clarke, T J Matthews, A Swift, S Latimer, A Linton, L Doig and J M Stuart (vice president). During the evening patriotic speeches were made by the chairman and Mr W Royle, and presentations were made to the soldiers by Mr G Johnston on behalf of the club. One of the early players to enlist was Charles Fincher who was killed in action, and as a mark of respect to his memory a place was left vacant with his name attached. An enlarged photograph of him was presented to the club by Mr C McBean, and this is to be hung in the clubroom. At the conclusion of the evening the soldiers were collected in the centre of the room, and the company, numbering about fifty, gathered round them in a circle with linked hands, and sang "Auld Lang Syne" with enthusiasm.
