This paper is desirous of compiling a complete and reliable list of names of "our boys" who have volunteered for military service since the beginning of the war. The district covered will include Keilor, Bulla, Broadmeadows, Essendon, Moonee Ponds, Ascot Vale, Flemington, and Kensington. In order to secure an accurate record, we invite readers generally to co-operate with us by forwarding names omitted from our list. In this connection, relatives of soldiers, clergymen, and secretaries of friendly societies, sporting and other organisations are especially asked to lend their aid. Names will be added as they come to hand until the list is complete. While thus building up our "Roll of Honour" we also desire to keep in touch with our brave lads, recording their movements and experiences at the front, and presenting happenings incidental to the varying fortunes of war. To this end, we will be pleased to receive for publication in this column letters forwarded by soldiers and other items of interest. The "Roll of Honour" is appended:-

From 13 May 1915 until 19 July 1917 the Essendon Gazette published a cumulative Roll of Honour, eventually taking up many columns of newsprint, in every edition. They included portraits of the wounded and killed, and letters and paragraphs passing on news of the local volunteers. It was probably at the behest of the government that the list stopped being published because of the impact the ever-growing list of deaths and injuries had on recruitment.
The last full Roll of Honour to be published in the Essendon Gazette appeared on 19 July 1917,

Below is a section of the Roll of Honour, from the edition of 12 July 1917.
Those who were still on active service were included in columns headed "With the Colours". A small section was devoted to recent recruits. Of the new recruits who went into camp, quite a few were subsequently discharged for medical reasons, or deserted, or did not embark for some other reason. As it has been a difficult task to match up all the names with service records, it seems probable that errors of initials has occurred, or men from another area were mistakenly included in the list. The list is not an official list, though some official sources would have been used, especially the lists of casualties.
