Hawkins G G C    Pte    496    Gordon Gray Carruthers   7 Inf Bn    26    Electrical engineer    Single    Prot

Address:    64 Lorne St, Moonee Ponds  [Electoral Roll 1914]

Next of Kin:    Hawkins, S P, Mrs, mother, Woodacres, Casterton

Enlisted:    18 Aug 1914

Embarked:     A20 Hororata 19 Oct 1914

Prior service: 1 yr 9 months Naval reserve  enlisted at Essendon

NOTE:  Although Hawkins' Embarkation Nominal Roll gives his address as 64 Park St, St Kilda, there is ample evidence that he was living and working in the Moonee Ponds area when he enlisted at Essendon.  There is a further entry for Gordon Gray Hawkins, electrical linesman, in the 1914 Electoral roll at 64 Canterbury St, Middle Park, which I take to be earlier address than the one for Moonee Ponds.

Corporal Keiller, who was enthusiastically received, said  that he had done his best. He thought that those at home knew more of the war than the men in the trenches, who were only aware of  what happened in their immediate neighborhood.........

He referred to the Portland boys whom he had met frequently at the front. He spoke feelingly of the boys who had fallen, of Gordon Hawkins, who, being killed while still in the boat, did not reach the firing line...

Gordon Hawkins was with those who landed early in the morning of 25th April, and was shot dead in the boat. Whether he was buried at sea or on the beach he (Cpl. Keiller) could not say.
