Recommendation for Military Medal, Australian Army Medical Corps, 9th Australian Field Ambulance.

34  Corporal Edward Hayes.

On 12th October, 1917, East of YPRES, this NCO was conspicuous for his gallantry and great devotion to duty.  He acted as quartermaster in an Advanced Post and it was largely due to his unremitting efforts, under heavy shell fire and in very severe weather conditions, that all the posts were kept supplied with necessities.  On many occasions he acted as stretcher bearer under heavy shell fire, although this was not a part of his duties, and brought in severely wounded men to his Post.  His example throughout was most inspiring to his comrades.

Cpl. E. Hayes, 9th Field Ambulance, France, who embarked 18th May, 1916, writes to his parents, 185 Holmes road, Moonee Ponds, that he received his decoration on May 12th, 1918. They had a great day at the presentation, there being 2000 present, besides the recipients and bands. Before being decorated, there was a church service; afterwards each one had the medal pinned on his breast by General Birdwood. The medal is of handsome design. On one side is the King's head and the other is lettered "Bravery in the field," and around is a floral wreath and number, rank and unit printed round the edge. "I feel proud of it and won't risk posting it to you, but will deposit it in Blighty when I go over, till I am coming home, if I have the luck to come out of it. Pleased you received all souvenirs. Can't send any more at present, as we are a long way from French towns. All we see is bare country, but lovely and green. We are well away from the lines at present. Had a few weeks' lazy he, but expect any day to be going into it. The life agrees with me - early to bed and open air. I was lumping oats from a ship; slightly injured my leg. Then we had a stiff march; it hurt, but finished O.K. We march 20 to 25 miles with full packs up, and finish like a Cup winner down the straight."
