A little under two years' prior to his enlistment in May 1917, Ernest Jay suffered and was operated on for a left inguinal hernia. Within a month of enlisting Jay developed a right inguinal hernia, and had been on light duties ever since. He initially resisted another operation, and refused to wear a truss, but in the end he had the operation, and was returned to Australia unfit for further duty.
Jay enlisted for Home Service for a period of weeks, but re-enlisted in the AIF and again embarked for overseas service in November 1917. He was embarked for France on 15 February 1918, but was returned to the UK for three weeks with phimosis on 28 February.
Jay was taken on strength of the 1st DAC on 23 August 1918, and then transferred to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade as a Driver on 4 October 1918.
In January 1919 he was admitted to the 1st Australian Field Ambulance with suspected tonsillitis or diptheria. This was diagnosed in the end as ulcerative tonsillitis, and it ended up giving him an early ticket home in April 1919.
