Essendon Gazette 17 June 1915

Private Frank Matthews writes from 2nd General Hospital, Mena Camp, Cairo, under date 5/5/l5. -

"I was wounded in the leg by a piece of shrapnel; but expect soon to be back to take revenge for being put out of the fight. so early. I can hardly realize that I've been under fire. We landed at 6 am on 25th April- I was hit at 9.30 and carried to the hospital ship at 12. pm. Our boys were brave, cool and determined. Our section was among the first to land, and the Turks greeted us with a hail of lead. A shrapnel burst near us and smashed our oars;  but not a man was hit. Some of the obstacles we had to get through were pits dug underneath the water filled with barbed wire and spikes; also mines.  We managed to get ashore safely, and the boys fixed bayonets and charged up the hill and drove the Turks out. During the charge, I got hit in the leg, and was thus put out of the fun."
