Gallipoli Campaigner Killed.

After passing through the Gallipoli campaign unscathed, Donald McPherson, about 30 years of age, who had received his discharge from the military forces on account of ill-health was fatally shot on Saturday afternoon at Craigieburn. Accompanied by a friend, William Edwards, of Harding street, Ascot Vale, McPherson was near the Merri Creek, when he shot a rabbit, which he handed to Edwards. Almost immediately afterwards the latter heard the report of a gun, and McPherson cried out, "My God! I'm shot." The second barrel of the breech-loading gun which he carried had lodged in his thigh, and he died a few seconds later. It is believed that McPherson tripped, and that his gun was discharged owing to its striking a large piece of stone jutting out of the ground. The body was removed by Constable W. Condon to the Morgue, where an inquiry will be held. The deceased is the eldest son of Mr and Mrs. W. McPherson, of 16 Mc Cracken street, Kensington, and was sergeant in the 2nd Divisional Signalling Corps.

Flemington-Kensington Church News, May 1917

No 4472 Private Les McPherson, son of Mr & Mrs McPherson, 16 McCracken Street, died of wounds in the 45th Casualty Clearing Hospital, on April 19th.  Coming so soon after the tragic death of his brother Donald (late Sergt in the AIF) this has been indeed an overwhelming blow to the parents.  Pray for them.  God help them.  "He hath done what he could".
