Volunteers of Essendon and Flemington, 1914-1918

This website is very much a work in progress.  Information will be loaded up progressively.  If there is something you don't understand, or if you would like to find out what other information I have about individual volunteers, or would like to contribute something to the site, please contact me.

Sources of data

1     Embarkation Rolls.  The primary record for the details relating to name, rank, number, age, address, next of kin, occupation, religion, date of enlistment, date and vessel of embakation is the Embarkation Nominal Roll.

2     The reason that the record is headed with the Embarkation Rank of the Volunteer is that it would take too long to sift through every service record (B2455) to extract the final rank.  Owing to the way the files operate in this Wiki webpage I won't be changing that rank, but anyone who wishes to add a short biography of any volunteer may do so, and include their final rank.   I encourage people to do this.

Spelling

3       The spelling of the surnames and the use of varying initials has made the task of linking up the references on honour boards and honour rolls fairly tricky.  I have tried to use the spelling the soldier himself used in his B2455 service record.  In some cases I have corrected spellings in honour rolls and other lists to aid identification, but in other cases the incorrect spelling remains in those lists.

Identification

4      Correct identification can be difficult, but I have used what sources I have available, such as dates of enlistment, newspaper reports, and so on, to identify the volunteers.  I am sure I will have made incorrect identifications and I am happy to hear from you if you feel I've got something wrong.
