Red Cross Wounded and Missing - John Joseph Walshe

Australian War Memorial

ANZAC Mtd Regiment 1  Walshe J J 492

March 29th 1917

He was missing at Longueval.  The went out on patrol but finding the enemy in strength they retired.  halfway back Fritz put up a barrage which compelled them to split.  He was never seen again but a week after I saw his horse dead on the main Cambrai road.  It was killed by rifle bullets which rather points to the fact that he was not got by shell.  There is a rumour that the infantry saw him leading his horse towards the German line and it is generally thought that he got shell shock and then went towards the German lines.  I knew him well.  I was in his squad in Australia.  We called him Jacky.   This was at the end of March.  The officer in charge of the patrol was Lieut Lade, A Squad, 1 Anzac Mounted Troops.

Dear Bill

Just a line to let you know I am a prisoner of war.  I was captured on March 29th whilst out on patrol, and am pleased to say I have so far kept good health.  Will you please write to Cliff Burge in the Regiment and tell him where I am, and say Sgt McDonald [1] is here, and to write to me and re-address my letters.  He might reach me and he might not.

TROOPER JACK WALSHE (Prisoner of War.)

Trooper Jack Walshe, reported missing on March 29th, but now a prisoner of war in Germany, is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Walshe, of "Adair," Daisy-street, Essendon, and is 21 years of age. He left for the front with the 13th Light Horse, and has been on active service for over two years. He took part in the evacuation of Gallipoli, also in the Pozieres and Somme offensives. Prior to enlisting, he was on the staff of the Immigration department, and was a bugler in the 64th (City of Melbourne) Infantry Brigade. He was also well known as a drummer in the Irish Pipe Band. Writing from Germany on April 14th, a fortnight after he was taken prisoner, Trooper Walshe says that he was captured while on patrol, and was fortunate in getting off lightly, as his horse was badly injured. He is well, and waiting patiently for the end of the war. Quite a number of Australians are prisoners with Trooper Walshe in the same camp.
