In February 1914 a large number of boys from the Area 58 Cadets  who had not complied with orders to parade for compulsory military drill were brought before Magistrates at the Essendon Police Court.  They were let off with a warning that if they did not in future turn up for drill, the court would not deal with them so leniently.  The following week it transpired that Frederick William Wright had again not presented for drill, and was consequently committed to the custody of the Officer Commanding the Australian Royal Artillery Garrison at Queenscliffe for 20 days. If Fred and the other lad had reasons for non-compliance, the newspaper did not choose to report them.  http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article74492034

Fred Wright enlisted on 9 April 1915, and went on to serve on Gallipoli but was evacuated from the Peninsula with sickness on 23 November 1915.  While in hospital in Egypt, Fred received a small pocket book Short Prayers and Counsels for Soldiers, in which he wrote his name, regimental number, company and battalion, the hospital where he was a patient, and the date, 10 December 1915.
