"For consistent gallantry and devotion to duty.  As Regimental Sergeant Major throughout the period February to September 1918, he has shown untiring energy and devotion to duty and an utter disregard for personal safety.  During the advance from VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 8th/9th August 1918 he took charge of all ration parties, and maintained this  supply of ammunition etc in the face of heavy and continuous shell and machine gun fire, across open country and by his example and fortitude he maintained the morale of his parties under the most trying conditions."
