Private J. S. Angus, of 7th Battalion (missing), is a son of Mr. Angus. the well-known manager of the Union
Bank, Newmarket.

Last week, Private J. E. Angus. 7th Battalion A.I.F. was reported as missing On Tuesday morning his father, Mr. Geo. Angus, manager of the Union Bank,  Newmarket, was officially notified by the Defence Department that the young soldier had been killed in action at the Dardanelles.

Referring to Col. Hawker's telegram of 21st June to Rev J G Stirling notifying the death of my son in action ---

Can you give me any information as to date and circumstances.   Also, please advise when his effects are to be returned.

Of all local letters from his comrades not one has definitely known that the boy was killed.  Two of his tent mates who were reported missing at same time (Read* and McNab) were subsequently reported wounded but relatives in neither case have received word from them nor can they obtain any knowledge of hospital whereabouts.  You will therefore understand the feeling that the boy may yet come to light as a prisoner.  Kindly reply as soon as possible.

Your Letter of 15 Aug

In a letter to his mother under date 18 Aug Lieut Wickham Assist Paymaster AIF Cairo writes:-

"You might tell Mrs Angus that the following is true in the main and has been related to me by a pal of Jack.  It appears that Jack was shot in the head and killed instantly on the beach immediately after landing as was also young Carless.  They were buried in the one grave.  At first Jack was posted missing but on additional information coming to hand the correct entry was made in the Battalion orders:-

It would appear therefore that no notification of this was sent to you:- The information is doubtless correct but I would be obliged by your making necessary enquiries and sending me a certificate in course. -

"At last, I have succeeded in getting news of poor old Jock Angus, and the news came as a great blow. A corporal of his company told me yesterday that he was shot through the head just after he had landed on the first day".
