2396—Trooper Ken. M. Battersby, B Squadron, 4th Light Horse, left these  shores 17th April, 1916, and went to Egypt. He took part in the operations in Egypt, and in the slow but sure march of the army from that country across the desert to Palestine. It was a march which tried the fortitude of the men. The Light Horse were well to the fore in all the desert battles. To the utmost joy of  both man and beast the desert was at last passed through, and they were  among real grass and trees again.  Then there were the battles and the long wait in front of the Turkish trenches. Under Allenby's able generalship came the sharp conflicts at Beersheba and Gaza, in which the Light Horse did almost incredible things.

When only l4 miles from  Jerusalem,  to the great  disappointment of Kenneth, as the result of a wound and later of blood poisoning he had to return to hospital. In one of his letters he says :— "We have had a rough time, both man and horse. In some parts of our travels our horses have gone one and two days without water, and for a month we have not had our clothes off. As for having to wash, it is out of the game altogether ........ We are on our way to the Holy City, and every man is longing to see it. Jacko won't stop us, but he is bound to have a good try. It will be no use as we have made up our minds, and we are going to enter whatever comes or goes."

We are glad to say that from latest accounts Kenneth is well on the road to complete  recovery.
