In 1914 Ramsay Bishop was a member of the General Committee and the Angling Committee of The Essendon Fish Protection Society. He resigned from those positions on 21 December 1914, having enlisted in the AIF 5 weeks before. His resignation was accepted with regret, and it was recorded in the minutes of the club that "The President, C Walker, on behalf of the members, presented Mr R Bishop with a wristlet watch on the eve of his departure with the troops to the front." (p 88). On 8 June 1915 Bishop wrote to the club indicating "that he had been wounded". He had returned to the club by August 1915 and formally welcomed by the President. Over the next few years his absences were noted, and he died in May 1923.

BISHOP, RAMSAY, soldier, No. 5 Normanby-street,
Moonee Ponds, reports stolen from him (supposed)
in a cab, between Collins-street, Melbourne, and Moonee
Ponds, between 9.30 and 10.30 p.m., on the 22nd inst,
a silver open-face watch, illuminated hands and dots
on the dial; a silver hunting case watch with initials
" R. F. B." and " 1914 " on inside of back case; a gold
chain, three strands of the Prince of Wales' pattern, and
about eight round links at each end, has a sliding swivel
in centre set with a ruby; a small oval-shape gold
locket, ruby set in centre. Value £10 12s. 6d.
