Briggs fell through a hatch while on board a transport on 18 May 1915, and injured himself.   He was diagnosed with inguinal hernias on both sides.  He was boarded and returned to Australia.  He sailed from Suez on the "Ballarat" on 5 July 1915, arriving in Australia on 6 August 1915.  he was discharged from the AIF on 12 May 1916.
