Essendon Gazette 22 July 1915

Mr. R. Bryce, of Essendon, sends the
following:

"My youngest son, Jim, who is attached to the 3rd Field Ambulance, Queensland Section, writes this week, describing his landing at the Dardanelles, as follows.

viz;-—"Left Alexandra March 3rd, arrived Lemnos Island, March 6th, stayed till 23rd April; left 24th April; 2 p.m. arrived off -—-- Island; 8 p.m., anchored; transferred to Ribble, 10 p.m.; April 25th, left Ribble torpedo boat, 4 a.m., into small barges, towed to within 100 to 200 yds from shore, rowed balance, landed under rifle fire but lucky enough to miss them all. Laid under cover for about an hour, while firing was heavy; then we collected wounded. Am getting quite used to fun and rifle fire now. It comes in with the day’s menu. No doubt you will have read about the great charge by the 3rd Brigade. What oh! Australians! It was simply marvellous the way they went.

26/5/15
There was an armistice on,  a couple of days ago, to bury the dead. The numbers must have been enormous. I was up at the trenches, and had a good look at the -—-——-, who are dressed in various ways - some in khaki, blue and other colours. Our chaps are doing great work and love the bayonet charges, which the ---- have at great dislike for."

l have just received a cable from my other son, Rud, from Egypt, saying they have arrived there all safe. He is  attached to the 13th Light- Horse, Victorian.

Mr. R. Bryce, of Levien street, Essendon, has received word that his son, J. E. D. Bryce has been promoted to the rank of corporal. He is attached to the Australian Records Section, and took part in the landing at Gallipoli as a stretcher bearer with the Queensland Army Medical Corps. He left Alexandria on 21st March in charge of 12 men to open a records section in France, and while steaming near Malta passed a vessel that had been torpedoed. Corporal Bryce arrived in France on 27th March, and after two and a half days, train journey came to Rouen.

Mr. Bryce's other son,  P .R. (Rud.), who is attached to the 13th Light Horse, has been promoted to Staff Sergeant of his squadron, and has been patrolling on the Persian side of the Canal.
