CHAPLAIN S. L. BUCKLEY

The Rev. S. L. Buckley, who was associated with St. Thomas' Harriers for some time, and later, at the out  break of war, with St. James', recently volunteered as a private, and went into camp at Royal Park. The latest advices are that he has been made  chaplain.

ATHLETES AT ARMS

The torpedoed troopship Ballarat (writes Mr A. S. Howcroft) no doubt had amongst its military complement a number of wearers of the spiked shoe; one, however, can be named definitely in the person of Chaplain Captain S. L. Buckley. The Rev. L. Buckley, who went into camp some four or five months back as a private in the ranks, is well known in local amateur circles as one of the originators of the St. Thomas' Harriers at Moonee Ponds.

Latterly he has been connected with St. James' Anglican Church at Ivanhoe, and, as was his wont, soon organised a cross-country club from among the young men of that church. A small team made its first appearance on the occasion the last 10 miles C.C.C. was run (September, 1914). The team included the reverend founder, who came through in 124th place. May he be a starter at Caulfield in the next 10 miles.

A telegram has been received by Mr. A. H. Buckley, of Moonee Ponds, from his brother, the Rev. S. L. Buckley, formerly of St. James' Church, Moonee Ponds, who was on the Ballarat when it was torpedoed in the English Channel, that he arrived in England safely.

Extract from a letter by Hector Morrison of the Melbourne Hare and Hounds:

Last week I was on leave in London and had a hand clap me on the back. I turned round to see Captain Sydney Buckley just off the torpedoed Ballarat. He looked fit enough to run a ten.

RIGHT SORT OF CHAPLAIN

Captain-Chaplain Sidney Buckley was at latest advices in England. The Rev. Buckley was stationed at St. James Anglican Church at Ivanhoe up till early last year, when the need for men becoming acute, he most commendably volunteered and went into camp as a private. Later he was selected from the ranks to occupy, the position he now holds.

Whether in the sporting arena or the larger mission to which he has devoted his life, Captain Buckley's efforts are   ever marked by strenuous endeavor, and it is pleasant to record that on the voyage home he secured 250 additions to the ranks of the Christian Men's Society. The troopship was the s.s. Ballarat. Captain Buckley was one of the founders' of the St. Thomas' Harriers, and, curiously enough, shortly after landing, in England, met another foundation member of the club in Prunty.
