Burns was re-allotted on 25 May 1916 to the 59 Inf Bn, and on 15 Sep 1916 was taken on strength of the 60 Inf Bn. On 8 Dec 1916 he was admitted to the 8th General Hospital at Rouen with severe trench feet, and spent several months in hospital in England undergoing treatment. On 18 Oct 1917 he was returned to Australia for discharge.

Word has been recently received by Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Burns of North Essendon, that their second eldest son, Barry, died of illness on June 25th, at Weymouth, England. He contracted bronchitis in January 1916, on the Somme. Younger son, David, has been in an English Hospital since December, 1916 suffering from severe trench feet. He has already undergone two operations for the amputation of the toes on the left foot. Both sailed from Australia on April 4th 1916. Their uncle, Joseph Bowe, was recently reported as having died of wounds in France.
