Flemington-Kensington Church News, January 1919
Sergt. Chas. R. Carris, 29th Batt., embarked for Egypt on on 10th Nov., 1915, and there finished training and took part in some military operations. After about six months the Battalion sailed for France and the gallant 29th has been through many rough times since then. Our soldier was severely wounded in the head on 2nd March, 1916, but made a quick recovery. ln a letter which came through last mail, he says :—"l had a trip to Paris last January and had a fine time ......On the 22nd August I left my Battalion to go on 14 days leave to England and had a wonderful time. l was shown through one of the great munition works in the North of England (Vickers, Sons and Maxim, at Barrow-in-Furness) and found it very interesting indeed; I spent four days in Blackpool, which is the greatest seaside resort in England. lt is a great place, ........ I then went to London where l stayed for the remainder of my time. London does not appeal to the Australians now and they generally go North to Scotland, ......... I am now in a little dug-out ...... We are holding Brigade Sports tomorrow so I am looking forward to a good day‘s outing ....,.... I want to go to Nice next leave if I get a chance." But the last call came to the gallant hopeful heart on 30th September last. " Sleep quietly and well, Happy Warrior, sure of Heaven’s applause."
