DECEMBER IN DUG-OUT One can picture Corporal Terry, 5th Battalion, sitting in a muddy dugout in France, a day or two before Xmas, hurrying to finish his letter by his last half inch of candle.
He is writing to his mother and his sister, Miss Pearl Terry, of Learmonth street, Moonee Ponds. "Outside, the dugout," he says, "the mud is up to our knees. I wade through it and come back all muddy. Their I change my socks and rub my feel with whale-oil, and turn into my one nice dry muddy blanket, a sheepskin coat goes around my feet which I first put into a sand bag.
'"This morning it snowed and every thing was white, so the mud looked better for once. There is one consolation, I am well and seem to be made of iron. The candle is nearly out, but never mind, the war will finish soon."

ST. THOMAS' HARRIERS
Lance-Corporal R. Terry, of the St. Thomas' Harriers, returned from France a fortnight back. He is suffering from shell shock. Chaplain-Captain S. L. Buckley, of the same club, is reported still in England. In a recent letter he mentions having there met R. O. Allen, the Victorian three-mile champion, also Lieut. N. Johnston, who used to run a nice half-mile for the Malvern Club a few seasons back.

Sylvia, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. Durand, of Essendon, has murmured 'Yes' to the old, old question put to her by Mr. W. J. Rupert Terry, eldest son of Mrs. A. E. Terry, of Ascot Vale. There is a military interest in the match, as Mr. Terry and Mr. Durand are both returned soldiers. The former fought through Gallipoli campaign, and later saw 570 days' service with the A.I.F in France. He was never wounded, but suffered severe shell shock, which got him his discharge as unfit for further active service. He is only just turned 21. Mr. Durand was formerly attached to the 19th Co. A.S.C., and has done valuable recruiting work both in this and the Mother State.

- Falling In: Australians and 'Boy Conscription' 1911-1915, by John Barrett. p 222 "Another shop assistant, W J R T (1911, Moonee Ponds, Vic) did not like it [ie, compulsory training] at first, but found that the 'wonderful training.... fitted us well for the life ahead.' He might have meant his AIF service in Egypt, France and Belgium." From a questionnaire completed by WJRT in 1978, in the possession of the author at the time of writing in 1979. John Barrett's papers are now lodged at the National Library of Australia, and may include the questionnaires.
