"Killed 26.9.1917"

Description: Height 5'10" aged 25 years.

We were at Ypres, Polygon Wood on the 26th Sept 17.  Sgt Chapman and I were in a pill box in the front lines - about dusk.  Chapman went out to see result of barrage when he was hit in the head by a shell and killed instantly.  He was buried a few yards behind the front line.  A cross was erected but would not remain there as the Germans advanced over this ground afterwards.

Special enquiry  "Sept 26/27 1917"

No need for a description for this man as the Informant has shown me Chapman's identity disc.

At Polygon Wood on the night of 27th September about half an hour before the Battn was relieved, a H E shell from our own Artillery burst at the entrance of the Pillbox causing head injuries and shattered left arm to Chapman. Every possible aid was rendered b ut he died about a quarter of an hour later in my arms.  He was quite unconcious to the end.  We buried him in the vicinity of the Pullbox, and placed a cross on his grave, and left a disc tied to the cross for identification.  I have already supplied his parents with a full account of the death and burial.

Informant:  L/Cpl Hennessy, F J 2188  D Coy 29th Battn.

About 3 pm on 26.9.17 Chapman was killed instantly by a shell being much knocked about at Polygon Wood.  I saw his body about 3.30 pm, same day at a pill box.  He would be buried on the field as the dead were being  buried on the field at that time.  Did not see him buried.  I got knocked about 9pm that night.
