ENGINEER PROMOTED

Charles Matthew Cock, oldest son of Mr James Cock, of Essendon, formerly of Williamstown, has been made sub-lieutenant in the British Navy. He is on board H.M.S. Prince of Wales. He served his apprenticeship as an engineer at the Newport Work shops, and enlisted on August 5, 1914. With the rank of engineer-midshipman he proceeded to New Guinea, and was at the landing and capture of the German settlement. After six months at Rabaul he returned to the Commonwealth, and served nine months on H.M.A.S. Encounter. Coming to Victoria he passed his examination for sub lieutenant and proceeded to England as fourth engineer In a Commonwealth transport. Private Sydney J. Cock, a brother, is attached to the 12th Reinforcements, 1st Pioneers. He also served his apprenticeship as an engineer at the Newport Workshops.

Private Sydney J. Cock. second son of Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Cock, of 732 Mt. Alexander road, Moonee Ponds, has been reported as, having been admitted to the lst Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, suffering from gas poison. Prior to enlisting, he was employed at the Railway Workshops, Newport.
