Alexander John Alloway, born in Moonee Ponds, married Florence Beatrice Moore in 1911.  In the same year they had a son named Royal Alexander John Alloway in Carlton, and in 1913 a daughter named Ethel Muriel Alloway, also in Carlton.  A second son, Leslie James Alloway, was born in Essendon in 1917.

 

Alloway joined his unit from Reinforcements at ANZAC on 6 Aug 1915. He was admitted to hospital with dysentery a month later, and was evacuated to Mudros.   On 8 May 1916 he embarked on the Themistocles for return to Australia.

 

Embarking in November 1917 with the 31st Reinforcements of the Field Artillery Brigade, he was taken on strength of the 7th Field Artillery Brigade, joining his unit in France on 20 March 1918.
