With reference to the complaint made at the meeting of tho Essendon

some lads who were bathing In the vicinity of the cordite factory at Mari-
byrnong, Colonel R. Wallace, military commandant, has requested that the
police of the Essendon, Footscray, Maribyrnong districts should have no
tices posted, warning persons that they run the risk of being shot if they

approach close to the points where the guards are stationed; that when

challenged people must obey the instructions; and that anybody running away

HONOR ROLL UNVEILED

On 26th February the honor board at the Commonwealth Govoernment Cordite Factory at Maribyrnong was officially unveiled by the Assistant Minister of Defence, the Hon. L. E. Groom. The ceremony took place in the new recreation room, where the board occupies a commanding position. The room was crowded to overflowing by employees of the factory.

In the course of a very moving speech Mr. Groom said that the people of Australia and the Empire cherished certain high ideals of liberty and freedom. It was here that a man had the best chance of developing his individuality, and because of that we were already be coming a great nation. We had gone forth to fight for our ideals against a nation that believed in autocracy and the suppression of individuality by the oppressive power of her military system that killed men's initiative and reduced many almost to the level of dumb, though trained, beasts. If we searched for the source of the spirit that drove our freedom-loving men out to fight in this war we would find that it sprung largely from the woman-hood of our race. Although hundreds of   mothers and sisters in this country had lost dear ones at the front, not yet had he heard any of them complain of their sacrifice. We were all co-operating in this war.

Many people outside the firing line were also doing splendid service. At the cordite factory, for instance, very valuable help was being rendered without glamour of publicity by many loyal workers. Some of the press, especially the Melbourne press, did not seem to appreciate fully the efforts that Australia was putting forward today. However, it was the same press that ridiculed in the past the efforts of himself and his colleagues in advocating the institution of the Government factories and the navy, of which we are also so proud. Mr. Groom then paid a deep tribute to those whose names appeared on the honor hoard, which was then unveiled amid enthusiasm. A vote of thanks was passed to the Assistant Minister and the manager of the factory (Mr. N. K. S. Brodribb), who suitably responded.
