North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Company

Page history last edited by Lenore Frost 1 year, 5 months ago

Honour Rolls

It is likely that a Roll of Honour was created by the employees of the North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Company, which  had its headquarters in Mt Alexander Rd, Ascot Vale.  Certainly other tram depots created such boards, which are now located in the Tramways Museum adjacent to the Malvern Tram Depot.

While that Roll of Honour is missing, the following men of Essendon and Flemington had Tramways-related occupations, and probably worked for the North Melbourne Electric Tramways and Lighting Company.  This private operation was taken over by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in 1923.  The MMTB created a retrospective Roll of Honour of the men who died.

N.M.E.T. and L.C. Ltd. Roll of Honour.

Lance-Corporal C. G. Forrest, Sergeant G. F. Greig, Privates W. Sheppard, A. Hawkins, Lecky, A. Wallis, J. Conquest.

Lance-Corporal C. G. Forrest (of Scotland), 5th Battalion, lately reported wounded, will no doubt be remembered by a large number of the Company's lighting consumers for his courtesy and obliging manner, and it is to be regretted that he should be the first of the Company's roll of honour to fall so early in the operations of "our boys" at the front. It is to be hoped that he will soon be able to take his place in the ranks again, and further uphold his part in the "Call of Empire."
