Dalton enlisted under the name of Albert Edward Tuft Elsey, apparently because he felt he would not get his father's permission to enlist. Elsey was a schoolfellow from Flemington Primary School, who himself enlisted in 1917.

I, Mary Dalton
105 Shiel St, Flemington
declare that I am the mother of No 5344 Bugler A E Elsey 14th Reinforcements 22nd Battalion whose correct name is Gordon Thomas Dalton that he assumed the name of Elsey believing that he would not obtain the consent of his father to proceed to the front owing to the fact that he was but 19 years of age".
Declared 19 Aug 1916.

Just a line to let you know that it is true that I inlisted under a wrong name my proper name is Gordon Thomas Dalton of 105 Shield St, Flemington, my mother Mrs Mary Ann Dalton.  Father E G Dalton.  I enlisted under the above name well sir my mother told me in her letter  that you could alter it for me well sir I would be obliged if it could be done well I cant think of anything else.  I remain yours Truly, Bugler A Elsey alias G  Dalton".
