"John was born on 23 Feb 1895 at Hotham West, the 12th child of John Davis and Amelia Hughes. He was working as a carpenter, and living with his parents at 13 Albert St Moonee Ponds, when he enlisted in the 38th Battalion on 31 Jan 1916, he embarked as Sergeant No 1149 on 20 Jun 1916, and was promoted to lieutenant while overseas, returning to Australia on 27 May 1919, marrying Lillian Wallis 2 years later. John and Lillian had 2 daughters and divorced in 1937. John died in Hobart on 5 Oct 1939 and was buried in Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart on 7 Oct 1939. Lillian died on 7 April 1976 and was cremated at Fawkner Cemetery, her ashes being buried in the Rose Garden".

News has been received by cable from Sgt. J. C. Davis, of 13 Albert street. Moonee Ponds, that he has gained his commission as 2nd Lieut. whilst in the lines. Before enlisting he was 2nd Lieut. in the 58th Battalion, Moonee Ponds. Lieut. Davis is now in Blighty on furlough.
