Private Henry Leonard (Len) Wallis   Henry Leonard Wallis (Len) was born in 1893 at Brunswick.  He attended St Thomas' Grammar School and later worked as a draper in the family business, at 100 Puckle Street, Moonee Ponds.  On 29 Jun 1915 he enlisted in the army as Private No 2911 in the  14th Infantry Battalion.  At the time he was living with his parents at 20 Learmonth St,  Moonee Ponds.   Essendon Gazette 30 Sep 1915 Private Leonard Wallis, son of Mr. Harry Wallis, the well known draper, of Puckle street, and who has assisted his father in the business, left for the front on Monday. Private Wallis was the recipient of many kind messages and valuable and useful gifts, for which he desires to thank the donors.   http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article74590261   Len embarked on 27 Sep 1915 on HMAT Hororata with the 9th Reinforcements of the 14th Infantry Battalion.  He joined his unit at Ismailia, Egypt on 8 January 1916.      Len Wallis appears in a group photo with the 9th Reinforcements of the 14th Infantry Battalion, probably before his transfer to the 46th Battalion in March 1916.   Three months later, at Tel-el-Kebir he transferred to the 46th Infantry Battalion, and on 13 March 1916 was promoted to Acting Corporal.  He reverted to Private on 7 April 1916.  In June 1916 at Alexandria he embarked with his unit to join the British Expeditionary Force, disembarking at Marseille.      Len was killed in action in the battle for the village of Pozieres, on 9 Aug 1916. He is buried in Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boisselle, Somme, France.   The Argus 13 September 1916 News has come to hand that Private Leonard Wallis, eldest son of Mr Harry Wallis of Puckle street, Moonee Ponds, has been killed in action. The deceased, who was a very popular young fellow, was employed for some years in the Moonee Ponds branch of the State Savings Bank, and later on in his father's business.    http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article1623999     News has been received that Private Leonard Wallis, eldest son of Mr. Harry Wallis, of Puckle street, has been killed in action.
