Citation for Meritorious Service Medal

7th Battalion 2627  Australian Imperial Force.  CSM (WO Class II) T/Regimental Sergeant Major (WO Class I) George Leslie Wood DEACON
6 January 1919

A highly efficient and courageous WO.  He has during the period 16/17 September to 11th November, 1918, carried out the duties of the Regimental Sergeant Major with the greatest devotion and self sacrifice.  During this period when his Battalion was in the line east of PERONNE, W O DEACON was unceasing in his efforts to ensure the smooth working of the Battalion under very difficult conditions.  His supervision under shell-fire of ration, ammunition, &c`, control of working and carrying parties were beyond praise and by reason of the skill and care of the RSM it is certain casualties were avoided and the men in the line saved much inconvenience.

During the period in October 1918 when the Battalion was in rest this a.SM was conspicuous for his zeal in bringing the discipline of the Battalion  up to a high standard.

Major General
Commanding 1st Australian Division

-------------

Recommendation for Medaille de Honneur

A very gallant and capable Warrant Officer with much active service.  Thrice wounded during the operations in France.  His devotion to duty and bravery in the firing line has been of the greatest value to his company and his Battalion.  His stimulating presence in the line helped very largely in the good work done by Sgt major DEACON'S Coy, at HOLEBEKE, LA MOTTE WOOD, STRAZEELE and in the recent operations on the SOMME.
Ever ready to personally reconnoitre No-mans-land he has frequently contributed to the success of important patrols by going as a volunteer.

As a disciplinarian his work again has been of a high standard.   The Coy of which CSM DEACON is Sgt Major has won numerous individual honours and done extremely well in the attacks. There is no doubt but what the work of CSM DEACON has very largely contributed to these successes and he has never failed under fire to set a high standard of bravery himself.

Recommended 30 August 1918.  Not awarded.

Recommendation for Distinguished Conduct Medal.

26 September 1918.

For consistently good work and devotion to duty from 25th February to 16th September 1918, At STRAZEELE during a minor operation CSM DEACON under a heavy barrage showed great initiative in organising and forwarding ammunition to the line.

In the operations forward of VILLERS BRETONNEUX  in August he again showed gallantry and devotion to duty in keeping up supplies in the Company.  His personal courage and disregard for danger is an example to all his men.

T W Glasgow, Major General commanding 1st Australian Division.
