Recommendation for a Military Medal
5th Battery Australian Field Artillery 4888 Bombardier (A/Sgt) Charles Samson DEBNAM
6th January 1919
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the period 16/17th September 1918 to 11th November 1918. On Oct 3rd 1918, Sgt DEBHAM, then a Bombadier, was No 1 of a gun in a section commanded by the late Lieut H J FISHER. The Battery was being very heavily shelled, the shelling being hostile retaliation opened on to the Batter as soon as it commenced firing. Capt HOLLIS and Lt FISHER were killed shortly afterwards and Sgt DEBNAM at once took charge of the section and under his supervision the Battery's programme was fired. Sgt DEBNAM showed the greatest coolness, and the manner in which he carried out his duties was largely - if not entirely- responsible for the fact that the Battery was able to carry on. His work throughout the period has been characterised by great personal courage and splendid leadership.
