Private Leslie Williamson was among the section of the 5th Battalion reported missing. Williamson won the long jump championship in 1912 with a leap of 20ft. 8½in., and again in 1914 with 20ft 4½in.— the only occasions on   which he competed. He has held the athletic championship of the Presbyterian Sports Union, and is also an accomplished pianist, in which capacity he was till war began associated with the widely, known Lizards Social Club of Ascot Vale. The recent advices as to humane treatment of prisoners, by the Turks is reassuring, and will, to a degree, tend to lessen the apprehension of Williamson's many friends.

Essendon Gazette 1 July 1915

L. Williamson, whose name appeared in the official list of missing, was the winner of the Victorian amateur long jump in 1912, and again in 1914. He was a member of the Essendon harriers.

Essendon Gazette 15 July 1915

Private Les. Williamson (killed in action), of A Company, 5th Battalion, lst A.I.F., was well known in the Essendon district, especially amongst the Essendon harriers, of which club he was a prominent member. He was a good all-round athlete and his loss to the Essendon club will be a severe one. He first came under notice as a harrier at the annual meeting of the Malvern Harriers sports meeting in June, 1911, when at this meeting he won a high jump. From that time onwards, up till his leaving with the expeditionary forces, he won various events, from 100 yards up to half a mile. His most notable performances,  however, were attained at the Victorian Amateur Athletic Championships in 1912, when he annexed the long jump championship, with a jump of 20ft. 8 1/2 in., and again, in 1914, with a leap of 20ft. 4 1/2 in., the only two occasions on which he competed. He has also held the Athletic Championships in 1912, when ...................................... terian Sports Union at the annual Easter camp of the Presbyterian Young Men’s Bible Class Union. He was connected with the Flemington Presbyterian  Young Men’s Association, also being a member of that football club, and was very popular amongst his fellow companions. Private Les Williamson was also an accomplished pianist, and at the time of his departure for the front, held that capacity with the Lizards Club, Ascot Vale. Prior to his leaving on active military service, he was residing with his sister, Mrs. W. Easton, Racecourse road, Newmarket, and was in the employ of Bussell, Robson, Bussell, where he was held in high esteem by all who knew him.

Among those of our boys at the front, we regretted very much to hear of the death of "Les" Williamson, who, we grieve to say, was killed in action at Gallipoli. No more popular member has been lost by the Club. It has been decided to erect a Roll of Honour in the Club Room.

In view of Williamson's occupation of 'draper', and the messages of sadness from the 'lace and fancy department' girls from Bussell, Robson Pty Ltd. he probably worked for that company in their store at 246-252 Bourke St, Melbourne.   They had an extensive range of mens', women's and childrens' clothing, linen, quilts, towels, sheetings, etc.
