Lieut.-Colonel A. Deeble, 8th Victorian Light Horse, was the officer in charge of the troops which returned on Friday. Colonel Deeble was the officer in command of the Australian officers who formed an escort at the opening of the Imperial Parliament in February, 1917. Prior to the outbreak of. the war he was on the staff of the Essendon High School. He left as Major of the 8th Regiment of Light Horse, serving in the Gallipoli campaign. He was promoted Lieut.-Colonel on service, and was later invalided to England. Colonel Deeble is a native of Ballarat. He graduated M.A. at Melbourne University.

In your issue of yesterday appears, a reference to Lieut. -Col.A V. Deeble.
Lleut-Col. Deeble was not principal of this school. He is a third master (on
leave on active service). In justice to the former head master and the senior
members of the present staff, I ask you to correct the error.

"Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur Vivian Deeble, son of the late Mr Joseph Deeble of Ballarat, enlisted as a Captain on the 24th of October 1914 and embarked as a Major with the 8th Light Horse Regiment on the transport Star of Victoria on the 25th of February 1915. After serving in Egypt for some time, he proceeded to Gallipoli with his unit on the 16th of May. He commanded the second wave of the famous charge on Walker's Ridge on the 7th August 1915, and was promoted on that day to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and to command his regiment. On the 13th of September he was admitted to hospital sick, and invalided to England on the 21st of June 1916. On the 14th of March 1917 he was appointed to the command of the 69th Battalion, which he organised and trained until its dissolution in September 1917. On the 23rd October 1917 he proceeded to France, and was given command of the 48th Battalion. On the 28th of March 1918 he returned to England on duty. He returned to Australia in charge of troops on the transport Gaika on the 5th of July, and was discharged on the 22nd of the same month. Prior to enlisting he was teaching at the Essendon High School".
Deeble retired from teaching after the war, and the Electoral Rolls indicate that he took up grazing in Marnoo in the Wimmera.
