Dove had been transferred to the 58th Battalion at the time he was recommended for the Military Medal.

Dove, John, Private. Born 27th May 1896. Enlisted 6th July 1915. He served as a
private in the infantry, and was wounded in the shin by a bullet at Fleurbaix 1916.
He was fighting at the Somme, Bullecourt, Polygon Wood, Messines, Villers Brettoneaux,
Peronne, and Bellecourt, and in the last offensive of the Hindenburg Line. He is the
possessor of the Roumanian "Barbatie Si Credinta".

Private J Dove was wounded on 21st July, and is now in the Third Canadian Hospital. The injuries are gunshot wounds in the legs.

Recommendation for Military Medal: Jack Dove
"For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty between 17th December 1916 and the cessation of hostilities on 11th November 1918. Private Dove's work was particularly good during the attack on the LE CATALET line near BELLICOUET on the 29th Sept. 1918 and the succeeding two days. Pte Dove was acting as runner and carried messages through heavy shell and machine gun fire. On several occasions went out and mended telephone lines when the majority of linesmen had become casualties. Thus, the most advanced troops were kept in touch with Battalion Headquarters. Pte Dove has always done excellent work on the line and on this occasion his courage was an example and an incentive to all round him". 58th Battalion.

It would appear that Dove did not receive the Military Medal, but instead the Roumanian "Barbatie Si Credinta". |
