Flemington-Kensington Church News, December 1917
We welcome back among us Pte John Downie, 14th Batt. He sailed on August 1, 1916, with reinforcements for 59th Batt. After some training in England, he went to France, and spent his 19th birthday there on Dec 26th. In February he was transferred to 14th Batt beside his brother Allan. They were together till April 9th. On that date Jack and four others were in a dug-out when a shell burst near it, killing three and burying them all. Jack was uninjured except for shell-shock. After a few weeks rest, he was back again in the trenches but was gassed in July. Classed as unfit for further field service, he is now home again. Welcome back and a happy Xmas to you!
