Private C. Drysdale, in a letter to his mother. Mrs. Drysdale, Union road, Ascot Vale, writes notifying his arrival in France, and telling of his trip from Egypt. The trip on board the transport was made in calm weather. They were escorted by a destroyer which chased a "sub." which had sunk a vessel, as the destroyer brought back a load of passengers. If a man only saw what was going on here, he would not stop at home long. The train journey from Marseilles to Calais is described in the letter, and the people at the stations welcomed them warmly. They treated the boys to cigarettes, bread and coffee, etc. They passed close to Paris, saw a couple of trains full of Russians, and also a couple of trains filled with German prisoners, among them a lot of young lads. Pte. Drysdale is stationed at a rest camp about four miles out of a town, and it is an inspiring sight to see the French soldiers going backward and forward, but it made them sad to see nearly every woman in black."
