Farley, born in Maldon in 1874, had first married Louisa Edwards in 1895. They had two children, Elaine Victoria, born 1895 and Edwin Horatio born 1897. Louisa died in Maldon in 1898. The children appear to have later lived with a relative in Maldon, as when Edwin joined the AIF in 1918 he reported having done his compulsory military service in Maldon.
A month after enlisting on 29 August 1914, Farley married for a second time to Clara Elizabeth Turton.

FARLEY—TURTON.—On the 9th September, at
Toorak, by the Rev. W. S. Rollands, John Henry
(of the first expeditionary Force), second son of
the late Mr. and Mrs. C. Farley, of Maldon, to
Clare, youngest daughter of Mrs., and the late
Mr. Eli Turton, of Wodonga.

When the 1914 Electoral Roll was compiled, John Henry Farley, railway employee was residing at 104 Railway Place, West Melbourne, and Clara Elizabeth Turton, cashier, was at 111 Spring St, Melbourne. After their marriage they probably took a rental house at 48 Bowen St, Moonee Ponds. Farley had neglected to change his Next of Kin in his service records, though he had made arrangements for allotments to be paid to Clare. In 1921 Farley's record was altered to show Clare's address as 1 Gibson St, Alphington, though they were living at that address when Farley died there in 1918.
Farley was initially reported to have been Killed in Action on 8 May 1915, but was subsequently reported as wounded in action, and admitted to hospital in Port Said. Farley received a compound fracture of the left humerus caused by a bullet wound at Gallipoli. A memorial notice in the paper refers to him having received his wound at Cape Hellas. Farley was returned to Melbourne for a change in February 1916. Farley died on 21 February 1918, and his death was said to have been due to war service.
Farley was buried at the Brighton General Cemetery. Clare was buried with him in 1951.

and J. Noble (Mornington), aged 44 years.

DEATH OF MIR. JOHN H. FARLEY.
It is with regret that we announce the death of Mr.
John Henry Farley, which sad event occurred at his
late residence, Gibson Street, Alphington, at the
comparatively early age of 44 years. The deceased,
who was a native of Maldon, was a returned Anzac
hero, where he played a gallant part. The late Mr.
Farley, who frequently visited Wodonga took a keen
interest in all sporting matters, and was well known
hereabouts. He was a son-in-law of the late Mrs. E.
Turton, South Street, Wodonga.
