In 1914 Walter Ferguson was training with the Ascot Vale senior cadets. On 26 March 1914 the Gazette reported that he had been charged with obstructing a member of the military forces while on duty. He was fined 10s or in default 7 days at Queenscliff. On Saturday 14 June he was brought before the Police Court in Moonee Ponds for talking in the ranks, and was fined £1 or 10 days in detention at Queenscliff if he did not pay the fine. A fortnight later Ferguson appeared before the court for having failed to pay the fine, and was sent to Queenscliff for 14 days. On Tuesday 28 July Ferguson was sentenced to 20 days at Queenscliff. Despite his apparent reluctance to comply with drill requirements, he was a fairly early enlistee.
