Essendon Gazette, 12 August 1915. Tom Fitzgerald runs for the local
Council.
Mr. G. Thos. Fitzgerald, of Brewster and Mackay streets, Essendon, one of our most successful builders, went into camp last Monday. He was one of the hardest workers at the various fetes held in the City of Essendon during the last ten years, finishing up with a raffle last week, which brought £17 16s, and which amount he handed to the local Red Cross funds. He has always taken a keen interest in military matters, and was one of the initiators of the Essendon Citizens' Military Association, of which he has been a member of the executive since its inception. He went through the South African campaign, being awarded both the Queen's and the King's medals with six clasps. He is at present the president of the Suburban, Builders' Association, and secretary of the combined State and Federal Liberal party in the district. He has always been a live citizen, and has, from its foundation, been an active member of the Essendon Progress Association. He has been keenly interested in municipal matters, and at the last election, he put up a splendid fight for a seat for the Essendon Ward. Mr. Fitzgerald has always been a total abstainer, and for many years has worked hard for local option. During his absence on active service with the A.I.F., his business will be continued under the direction of Mrs. Fitzgerald at the above address.

Pte. Thos. Fitzgerald, writing to the "Essendon Gazette" from England, after being in Hospital suffering from gas and trench fever, expresses his pleasure at receiving copies of the local paper, which he enjoys reading. He says, "I will be joining the machine gun boys very soon now, and God knows that everyone who can work a rifle or gun is needed right now. Our boys are just 'it,' and one is proud to be an 'Aussi' and an old Essendon boy."
