SAVED BY A POCKET-BOOK.

This photograph show a the pocket-book car-
ried by Private R Garford at the Dardanelles,
with the bullet which pierced half - way
through it and remained embedded in the leaves
of his diary. Undoubtedly the book, which
was in his left-hand breast pocket, saved his
life. The book was presented to him at
Moonee Ponds prior to his departure. The
dented bullet is shown in the inset, slightly
less than its real size.

Recommendation for Military Medal

2nd Aust Div Signal Coy  1138 Sapper Robert GARFORD

At CLERY, near MT ST QUENTIN, on the 31st of August 1918, this soldier was engaged as a linesman at the Brigade Forward Station.  Throughout the day forward lines were repeatedly broken by enemy shellfire.  Despite this Sapper Garford, with very conspicuous coolness, patrolled the lines from end to end repairing one break after another.

His untiring efforts were responsible for the constant maintenance of communications from the Brigade Station to the Battalions.

Mentioned in this publication:

History of the 14th Battalion, AIF, by Newton Wanliss, 1929

POZIERES RIDGE. 1916—August 6 to August 16

Great and strenuous work, under most trying conditions, was rendered by the stretcher-bearers during the week of battle. The battalion R.M.O. (Capt. R Work of Che Winn) worked in a sap at the entrance to the Stretcher-Bearers dugout occupied by Battalion Headquarters On the Peninsula only four stretcher-bearers had been allotted to each company, but at Pozieres Ridge this number was largely increased, and amounted to no less than forty-five stretcher-bearers (including the band and five medical orderlies), in addition to sixteen partly trained men whose services were utilised when occasion required. Sgt. Gus Harris,  the N.C.O. in charge, was, as ever, bravery and efficiency personified, whilst the following were specially mentioned for their work:—Ptes. D. H FraserR. Garford,   S HenshallS A Markham, A. R. Dodemaide, and T. V. Hughes. p 147
