This board is located at the Junior School of Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, Raleigh Street, Essendon.   The board records the past pupils of St Thomas' Grammar School and Carlton College. St Thomas' Grammar started in 1906. The first Principal, George Gresham Robinson, came to the school from Carlton College, and a number of his former pupils there followed him to St Thomas'. Carlton College subsequently closed.  In 1936 St Thomas' Grammar and Northern Grammar amalgamated to become Essendon Grammar School, the second school with that name in the district.  After further amalgamations the school is now known as Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School.  (Photo:  Lenore Frost, 2009).

When Driver A D Wood enlisted in 1916, he gave his address as "St Thomas' School, Essendon".  As he was a solicitor and not a teacher, it is not clear why unless he had a relative teaching there, perhaps.

St Thomas' Parish Magazine  March 1915, pg 9

The school may well be proud of the number of its "old boys" that have volunteered for the front, and a Roll of Honour will be duly inscribed and placed in one of the rooms to keep in remembrance those whose high patriotism confers such honour upon their old school.

The following members of the Old Boys' Association are at the front or on the way:- Lieut C Rasmussen (Light Horse), Sub-Lieut Reginald Buller (HMAS Sydney), Lieut Thos Howard (Light Horse), Lieut Clement Lane (Infantry), Sergeant Tom Goodall, Sergeant Frank Eddie, Sergeant Rupert Pattison (Motor Transport), Sergeant Douglas Thomson (Army Service), Sergeant J Ross (Infantry) Sergeant P Warr, Lce-Corporal Strover, Corporal Alf Young (Infantry), Corporal Dermot Ryan, Bugler Rowland Ransom (Infantry), Gunner Stanley C Quinn (Artillery), Private Eric Broadbent (Light Horse), Private Rudolph Jacobson, Private Alex Macgibbon (Signallers), Private A Morris, Private G Paterson, Private K Walker (Infantry), Private E Ryan, Private G Brearley, Private J Berrill.

The appeal for help for the Belgians has met with a ready response amongst the boys, and the proposal that each boy should make a weekly donation from his money-box, was received with acclamation, and now every Monday the prefects are busy gathering the weekly contributions. On Friday morning the school was visited by Stewart Pullar, aged about 5 years, who did a roaring business in selling Belgian flags, and every boy, and the staff also, for the rest of the day were decorated with the colours of Belgium.

Essendon Gazette 1 July 1915

Sergeant R. Graves and Private Crescent Lyons, who are old St. Thomas Grammar School boys, and who left for the front last week, were each presented before their departure with a set of brushes in case, given by the staff and boys as a recognition of personal regard and also as an an appreciation of the fine spirit which has prompted them to fight for King and Country. Altogether, between thirty and forty old St. Thomas Grammarians are now fighting or in camp. This is a fine record from a school which has not been very long established.

The war has called many old boys to the front, and I think we should be proud of the fact that, although the school is little more than seven years old, it has contributed 54 of its sons to the fighting line, of whom several have been wounded and three of them have met a soldier's death. It cannot be said that St. Thomas Grammar School has trained any shirkers. The last to go were two boys who were with us last year, one being the captain of the school. Their names are Norman Mitchell and Arthur Craven. The Council of the school is making arrangements to have an honour board erected, when the names of our brave boys will be placed on the wall of the school to stimulate the younger generation to emulate them in the path of patriotism and duty.
