The Southland taking troops of the 21st and 23rd Battalions to Gallipoli was torpedoed in the Aegean Sea near the island of Lemnos on 2 September 1915. Les was admitted to hospital on Mudros with a contusion of the leg, which he presumably acquired during the attempt to escape the damaged ship by lifeboat. His friend Harry Grimes was reported to have been picked up at sea suffering from shock and contusions. It was not until 12 October that Les finally arrived at Gallipoli.
